Lessons Learned From My Own Personal Brand Photo Shoot

I am usually the person behind the camera but a few weeks ago I found myself on the other side of the lens.  I realized that I needed to practice what I preach which is we all need photos of ourselves that help connect our business to our customers.  So when my friend Jen of Jen Vazquez photography offered to take some photos of me, I said “yes”  (and to be honest I need a little bit of coaxing).

The experience was great because not only is Jen a terrific photographer but I learned a lot of lessons.  The main one is I walked away with a better understanding of what it feels like to be YOU. The same questions that run through your head were running through mine like:

  1. Do I look awkward?
  2. Do you really need to have the camera that close?
  3. How can I minimize my tummy?
  4. Is my outfit making me look bigger than I really am?
  5. How can I look natural and not like I’m trying too hard?
  6. Are my wrinkles going to be noticeable?
  7. What should I do with my hands?
  8. What am I really going to do with these images?

But here is the thing, when you work with an experienced photographer, you don’t need to worry about these things because your photographer knows how to address all of these concerns and is going to take care of you.  So put aside those fears and step out from behind your business and show your customers who you are!  And when you’re ready, know that I am too.

I hope you found my experience helpful.  If you have any questions about personal brand photography, I’m happy to answer them or if you’d like to sign up for my newsletter and receive a Free What to Where Checklist you can do so here.  Don’t worry, my newsletter is quarterly, so you won’t be overwhelmed with extra emails in your inbox. 🙂

Every time I head out for a shoot, I triple check my gear. Batteries? ✅ Memory cards? ✅ Camera actually working? ✅

I think it all started after I had a nightmare that I showed up and forgot to put the battery in my camera. 😅

Tell me I’m not the only one… other business owners — do you double (or triple) check everything before a big client day?
