I’m so excited to be kicking off a new year with another 7 on 7 project. Each month I, along with several other talented photographers, will be sharing 7 photos on the 7 of each month. So to start the year, I am sharing photos from my recent trip to Davenport, CA with my daughter Chloe.
Davenport is a cute little coastal town just 10 miles North of Santa Cruz. It’s known for it’s cliffs which are great for whale watching. At first we drove North of town to look for the Davenport Pier. We had seen photos on Instagram of ruins of a pier that have a swing attached and we thought it would be a fun photo op, but the tide was high and the waves covered the swing, so that wasn’t going to happen (there’s only so much I’ll do for a photo) but we did get some photos of the amazing views from the cliffs.
We then decided to drive a bit further and stopped at Swanton Berry Farms. If you’ve never been you should definitely go. It reminded me of the berry farms back in the Midwest where everything is on the honor system. Swanton Berry Farms is where you can pick your own strawberries (or whatever berries are in season) and they are also known for their amazing jams. The store is so cute offering a variety of jams, coffee and pastries. We decided to buy a jar of olallieberry jam and a piece of shortbread topped with olallieberry jam and whip cream. You pay and make your own change using a rustic little collection box located on the counter. Anyway, we took our yummy treat and headed to the beach to watch the sunset.
We ended up at Wilder Beach (I’ve actually had a family photo session here before, you can see photos here) which is a gorgeous beach that is popular among surfers. It’s well marked from the coastal highway but there really isn’t a parking lot to speak of so you’ll need to pull off on the side of the road if you go. It is a bit of a walk to the beach but there is a path and it isn’t steep like so many of the other beaches in that area. Once we got down to the beach we settled in and enjoyed our yummy shortbread and watched the sun go down. It was a great afternoon spent with my girl.
