Last month during spring break, we rented a beach house near Pismo Beach. It was our first time staying in this area and it was lovely. We picked Pismo because we wanted to tour Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (our daughter is a Junior) and check out a new beach area. We love vacationing on the coast and we are so lucky to have a wonderful array of beaches to choose from.
If you have never been to Pismo Beach it is worth the trip but there are a few things to keep in mind. First off, it is one of the few beaches in California where cars can drive on the beach. ATV’s and dune buggies are very popular in this area because of the large dunes just south of Pismo and that seems to be the main reason people flock to this area. So it is not uncommon to see trucks and RV’s pulling these toys down the beach. At first, I found that aspect a bit bothersome but then we got used to it. Thankfully, there are regulations and cars can’t drive near the beach houses but it was weird to seeing so many vehicles on these otherwise lovely beaches.
The other thing to note about this area, is it is super windy. I noticed many of the homes had windbreaks or shields along their patios to keep the sand from blowing in but the wind did seem to die down in the afternoon.
Anyway, we had a great time. My parents joined us for the trip and we all enjoyed relaxing on the beach. Our week was filled with college tours, trips to the farmer’s market, ATVing, wine tasting, flying kites and enjoying the gorgeous view.
